Endodontic therapy—more frequently referred to as root canal’ treatment—is a specialised procedure that treats the nerve chamber inside of infected or damaged teeth. At Maple Dental, our experienced dentists offer both traditional root canal therapy and endodontic treatment.
Typically teeth require endodontic treatment if they have experienced:
- Deep cavities
- Traumatic injuries
- Fractures or cracks
- Abscesses
- Severe pain
Without a root canal, these teeth usually break down on their own or need to be extracted.
What to Expect
During a root canal, the nerve and tissues inside the canal are removed, and the chamber is cleaned to treat the source of infection and pain.
After we remove the blood vessels inside the tooth and clean out the canal, we may need to place medication and wait a few weeks for symptoms to improve. On the second visit, we’ll place a filling material inside the canal to seal it off completely.
Most root canal procedures are spaced over two visits, about an hour or so each (depending on the severity of the infection). We also recommend placing a permanent crown over the tooth, since it will typically be weaker and more prone to wear.
Advanced Care Techniques
Our office is equipped with magnification tools to allow for more accurate and efficient endodontic treatment. Additionally, some of our dentists have expanded training in endodontics, allowing us to perform complex root canal treatments and retreatments in our practice.
Being that larger posterior teeth have extra roots and nerve tissues than smaller front teeth, the complexity and length of your procedure can be improved with these cutting-edge resources.
